Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827) was born in Germany and began learning music from his father at a young age. While still a boy, he became a traveling performer and earned enough to support his family. Beethoven eventually moved to Austria and became the first musician to make a living without being employed by the church or nobility. Beethoven is considered to be a brilliant composer and pianist, even as he became deaf in the later years of his life. He composed some of his best works after he had total hearing loss.
